6 tips to save on your pool and spa costs

Do you want to make the most of your pool or spa this summer? At times, however, you may find that the electric bill goes up quickly. In fact, 70% of your summer electricity bill could be related to the operation of your pool or spa.Save on your pool costs

So here are some tips from Hydro-Québec to help you save on your pool and spa costs.

1. Choose a heat pump

If you want to integrate a device to heat the water of your pool when the temperatures are a little cooler in the evening, the option of a heat pump should be given priority over an electric resistance pool heater. The heat pump offers superior energy efficiency by capturing heat from the air and transmitting it to the pool. This will save you up to 75% on your electricity consumption for water heating.

The heat pump must be installed in a place with a good supply of air by a master electrician.

Good practice to adopt:

  • During cold seasons, cover your heat pump with a protective cover.

2. Install a solar cover

A solar cover is another way to reduce your pool costs. Indeed, it reduces heat loss, thus reducing your heating costs. By covering it for 16 hours a day, you can save up to 45% on these fees.

A pool cover also cuts down on maintenance costs (and time!) by preventing the build-up of debris.

Good practices to adopt:

  • Cover your pool daily at night and in hot weather with your solar cover.
  • Position the liner so that the bubbles are in contact with the water of the pool.

3. Use your spa cover effectively

Similar to swimming pools, covering the spa when not in use can dramatically reduce heat loss and associated costs. It is therefore good practice to close the cover of your spa between each use. In fact, to reduce losses even further, get a rigid, well-insulated cover if you don't already have one.

4. Use a standby temperature for your spa

It can also be very economical to switch to a standby temperature in your spa. A simple 2 degree drop can dramatically reduce your electric bill.Save on your spa costs

5. Choose a 2-speed pump

The pump is the heart of the pool. Since it can use up to ten times more electricity than a new refrigerator, it's important to make an informed choice.

If you need to replace your pump or have one installed for your new pool, opt for a 2-speed pump. It will save you up to 70% of your electricity consumption related to water filtration.

  • For ease of use, use a 2-speed pump equipped with a device to automate the periods of high and low speed operation.
  • Choose an ENERGY STAR certified model and have it installed by an experienced professional.

By purchasing a 2-speed pump, you will see the savings from the first summer.

6. Add a timer to optimize the use of the pump

The integration of a timer in the pump represents a saving in electricity consumption of up to 45% without however affecting the quality of the water.

Choose a timer compatible with a current of 15 amps and which will be able to retain the programmed shutdown time, for example in the event of a power failure.

Also, another important tip for using your pool and spa: make the most of it with your family and friends to cool off and have fun this summer.
