Electric vehicle home charging
Thinking of getting an electric vehicle?
First of all, you need to know that since 2010, all mass-market electric vehicles in North America have used the same outlet and a standard connector (SAE-J1772). This means you can plug your EV into any 120 volt household outlet or 240 volt charging station in North America.
There are 3 types of recharging source in your home.
- 120 Volt Outlets
Approximate charging time
- Plug-in hybrid: 6 to 8 hours
- All-electric vehicle: 11 to more than 20 hours
- 240 Volt Stations
Approximate charging time
- Plug-in hybrid: 3 to 4 hours
- All-electric vehicle: 6 to 8 hours
- Fast Charge Stations
This quick chargers come with a high purchase and installation cost.
Estimated charging time
- It takes 30 minutes to charge a battery to 80% capacity (45 minutes in winter).
- In 10 minutes, a quick charger can provide enough electricity to run an all-electric vehicle for 50 kilometres.
Before driving your electric vehicle off the lot, make sure you are properly equipped for home charging. As a rule, the main charging site for electric vehicles is at home because that’s where vehicles spend most of their time. Do you have a garage? An outdoor parking spot with an electrical outlet? That will be “home base” for charging your EV.
Most electric vehicle or plug-in hybrid owners decide to have a 240-volt charging station installed in front of their home.
